Wrinkles Q & A

Why am I getting wrinkles?

Wrinkles develop as a consequence of the aging process, when several factors come together to cause lines to form in your skin. A reduction in the levels of substances such as collagen and elastin that happens around middle age results in skin and underlying tissues losing plumpness and elasticity.

Your skin grows looser and thinner, tissue underneath diminishes, and the newly thinning skin forms lines and folds. Some wrinkles are fine lines that form in networks; others are deeper creases, such as brow lines, labionasal creases on either side of your nose, or crow’s feet.

Can I prevent wrinkles from forming?

Wrinkles are a fact of life, and as you age, you’re bound to develop at least a few of them.

Certain lifestyle factors increase the likelihood you’ll develop wrinkles early or be more severely affected by them, such as:

  • A family history of being prone to wrinkles
  • Smoking tobacco
  • An excess of sun exposure over time

There’s not a lot you can do about genetic factors, but protecting your skin from the sun and tobacco smoke can make a significant difference to how soon and how badly you develop wrinkles.

Healthy lifestyle choices such as eating a nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly, and making time to relax all contribute to healthier skin, and following a sensible skin care regime help with your complexion.

What can I do to reduce wrinkles?

A vast industry is based around the power of creams and other topical treatments to reduce lines and wrinkles, but none of them provide a miracle cure. Check the ingredients for active substances such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, and antioxidants to see if a particular product is likely to be effective.

Other options include:

  • Chemical peels
  • Dermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Injectables such as Botox®
  • Dermal fillers
  • Laser resurfacing
  • Ultrasound therapy
